Las Fallas Fire Festival in Valencia

Valencia is saying goodbye to winter with songs, jokes and the light of giant bonfires.

From March 15 to 19, the City of Flowers holds one of the most colorful festivals of the year – the Las Fallas Fire Festival. The center of the festivities is traditionally its main square Plaza del Ayuntamiento. There is a street fair, musicians, mimes, acrobats, contests, folk dances, and in the evening there is a fireworks show and fireworks.

The main feature of the holiday Las Fallas – huge (up to 20 meters high) dolls “Ninots”. About 750 such figures and compositions from them are installed on special pedestals throughout the city. The inspiration for the puppet creation are folk tales and the realities of Spanish life. Many of the giant compositions ridicule the powerful. And, get not only famous foreign politicians, but also the mayor of Valencia, and the Spanish Royal couple. At the end of the festival the works of puppetry is waiting for an unenviable, but bright fate. During the La Crema ceremony they are taken to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and burned. However, the best figure – after a popular vote – is pardoned. The “survivors” become part of the impressive collection of Valencia’s “Museo de Falsas”.
